Project Overview
Turnell Corp performed a structural evaluation of an existing bulk material storage bin to support a conversion to a suspended hopper arrangement. The project used finite element analysis to assess the bin shell, hopper, support rings, and suspension components under the anticipated loading conditions.
Analysis Approach
Our engineers developed a three-dimensional model and evaluated the effects of self-weight, stored material pressures, wall friction, and seismic loading. The analysis examined stress distribution, deformation, and support reactions, with detailed review of the shell-to-hopper transition and the connections supporting the suspended hopper.
Engineering Recommendations
The results guided recommendations for additional support stiffeners and local reinforcement. Bolts, nuts, bearing plates, and resilient pads were also evaluated as part of the suspension system.
